Avalon Waterways’ newest cruises ‘tap’ into three trends: the perennial popularity of France, wine travel, and extended cruises. Beginning in 2025, the river cruise line is launching 1-, 2-, and 3-week sailings through one of the world’s epic wine regions: Bordeaux.

Not only is Avalon launching cruises in the Bordeaux region on the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers, it’s putting together cruise combinations that include the two other major French river itineraries: the Seine and the Rhone/ Saone, as well as the Rhine that sails between Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Wine lovers can bid Bordeaux ‘bonjour’ along with some of France’s most historic and noble wine chateaux and cellars. The cruise line has three styles of shore excursions: Active, Discovery, and classic ways to experience the shores of the rivers in Bordeaux.

Imagine yourself enjoying Sauternes tastings and crème puff baking classes mixed with e-biking through vineyards and free time in postcard-perfect places like Saint-Émilion (pictured, top), Bourg and Arcachon.
